Founded in 1997, Somerset Academy Charter School opened in Miramar, Florida, to humble beginnings. Appropriately named Somerset Neighborhood, the school was housed in a two-room schoolhouse and served 50 students from Kindergarten through 5th grade. To meet parental demand, the school expanded in the years to follow but was careful to maintain a nurturing, tight-knit learning environment that parents love and in which students thrive.
Somerset Academy, Inc now offers high-quality K-12 educational programs in Florida, Nevada, Texas and Spain that have, and continue to achieve academic success. Although all Somerset Academy schools share a vision, each campus has a unique and enriching educational program that is tailored to the community they serve. This formula, along with incredible support from parents, has made Somerset Academy a nationally recognized, award-winning family of high quality public charter schools. The first Mater school opened in 1998, just one year after the passing of charter school legislation in Florida. Over the years, Mater Academy would expand its reach to more underserved communities in Hialeah, Hialeah Gardens and Little Havana by opening additional elementary, middle and high school campuses. By 2010, Mater Academy had 14 schools serving more than 6,300 students in grades PreK-12 across Miami-Dade County. By 2015, just five year later, enrollment had more than doubled to 13,380 students throughout South and Central Florida.
Today, Mater Academy serves over 19,000 students from all socio-economic backgrounds across 30 charter schools throughout Florida and Nevada. These tuition-free schools reinforce our deeply rooted belief that at MATER, every child can excel and every child must have the opportunity to do so because every child matters.

Theodore R. and Thelma A. Gibson Charter School
Theodore R. and Thelma A. Gibson Charter School was founded by Mrs. Thelma Gibson in honor of her late husband, Reverend Theodore Gibson and is located in Overtown Miami, just a few block away from Theodore Gibson Park. Reverend Gibson was a civil rights activist and president of the Miami chapter of the N.A.A.C.P. from 1954 to 1964. As the third African American to serve on the Miami City Commission (1972 – 1981), he worked to improve the lives of the African American population living in South Florida. An orator and a visionary who fought racism, Reverend Gibson’s memory is forever honored through the Theodore R. & Thelma A. Gibson Charter School.
Miami Children’s Museum Charter School
Miami Children’s Museum Charter School is one of two museum-based schools in the United States that offers a unique creative atmosphere for children to play, learn, imagine and create. The mission of MCMCS is to inspire all students to reach their full potential. The school provides individualized instruction in order to address student needs. MCMCS provides a unique learning environment through the use of museum exhibits, facilities, and resources. In August of 2010, the City of Belle Isle, Inc. opened Orange County’s first K-12 Charter School, Cornerstone Charter Academy (CCA). CCA has a curricular focus on biotechnology and life sciences. Cornerstone provides that focus daily with the use of in-class promethean boards, as well as net books and laptops in the classrooms and three large state-of-the art computer labs to enhance the students’ academic and technological experience. CCA has consistently ranked among the highest performing schools in Orange County.
