What is School Choice?

By Rachel Ramirez | May 02, 2022

Before truly celebrating School Choice Week, we must first understand school choice. This term refers to a family’s right to decide which learning environment is best for their children. There are many options parents can choose from – public, charter, private, magnet, virtual, and homeschool. This wide variety of options guarantees that parents can personalize their child’s education and prioritize their learning style and interests. Every child is different, and so is every school. As such, it is essential to find a school that complements the student.

Academica-supported charter schools are schools of choice. Unlike public schools, students are not assigned a charter school based on specific factors. Instead, parents and their children decide what school to choose. The Academica network serves thousands of students who choose to enroll in one of our schools because of the many opportunities for student success. Some of the opportunities for success include college preparatory curricula and international and dual-language programs. Not to mention, Academica-supported schools offer cutting-edge, rigorous, and advanced curricula for our students. They value a healthy and versatile learning environment that encourages students to learn daily and pursue their passions. For instance, International Studies Charter High School (ISCHS) offers students international and language programs. The SLAM network uses “SLAM-ified” lessons to explain different concepts. Lastly, City of Hialeah Educational Academy (COHEA) offers numerous career academies. Newer Academica-supported charter schools also have such rigor. For instance, Mater Brickell Academy, opening in August of 2022, will have a rigorous curriculum centered around tech, finance, and entrepreneurship. These are just some of the many opportunities that our Academica-supported schools offer. However, our schools could not excel without outstanding students, so we are thankful for all the parents and students who choose to attend Academica-supported schools, and we celebrate their right to do so.
